Heilig-Geist-Stift-Schenke
The Heilig-Geist-Stift-Schenke on Heiliggeistgasse is one of the oldest and most atmospheric taverns in Passau, linked since the Middle Ages to the neighbouring Heilig-Geist foundation. Step through the narrow gateway into the vine-draped courtyard and you immediately slip into another era: old grapevines climb the walls, in summer you sit beneath shady greenery, and the historic vaulted cellar with its cross vaults and candlelight ranks among the most romantic places to dine in the whole city of three rivers.
What makes it special is that the foundation farms its own vineyards along the Danube and in Austria's Wachau valley. House wine and select bottles therefore come straight from the estate's own vines. The kitchen stays deliberately regional and Old Bavarian: fish dishes from the Danube, Inn and Ilz, seasonal game from the Bavarian Forest, hearty roasts and rustic specialities that pair beautifully with the wine. The price level reflects the upscale yet unpretentious approach.
The location in the heart of the baroque old town, just steps from the Danube promenade and St. Stephen's Cathedral, makes the tavern an ideal choice for an atmospheric evening. Anyone who appreciates history, estate-grown wine and honest regional cooking is in exactly the right place: a classic for special occasions, romantic dinners for two or a cosy end to a day exploring the city.
