District

Hacklberg

Hacklberg sits on the wooded heights to the north of Passau, above the Danube and a little apart from the historic center. The district is best known for the long-established Hacklberg brewery, whose history goes back to a prince-bishop's brewing operation and thus reaches into the era when Passau was an independent prince-bishopric. The stately brewery palace with its shady beer garden is one of the most popular places in town to stop for a drink, combining brewing tradition with Bavarian inn-house coziness.

Around the brewery, Hacklberg has grown into a quiet residential quarter amid greenery. From the higher streets the gaze sweeps far across the Danube valley, and footpaths and hiking trails quickly lead out into woods and fields. The elevated setting brings an airiness and breadth that the narrow river valley of the Old Town lacks.

At the same time, Hacklberg is closely tied to modern Passau: the University of Passau, with its campus on the Inn, lies just a stone's throw away, so the quarter is also valued by students and families. Recreation, brewing tradition and short routes into the center make Hacklberg a relaxed, liveable district with a character all its own.
