Passau in One Day
If you only have one day in Passau, focus on the baroque old town — a narrow peninsula between the Danube and the Inn that looks like an Italian cityscape. We start at St Stephen's Cathedral with the world's largest cathedral organ, stroll through the lanes to the Old Town Hall, experience the meeting of the Danube, Inn and Ilz at the Three Rivers Corner and in the afternoon climb up to the Veste Oberhaus with its famous panorama. A Lower Bavarian lunch break and a relaxed evening by the Danube round off the day.
Best time to visit: May to October — the rivers and old town are at their best then
Day 1
The highlights in one day
We begin in the cathedral, follow the baroque lanes to the Old Town Hall and the Three Rivers Corner, have lunch in the old town and climb to the Veste Oberhaus in the afternoon.
- 9:30 - 11:00
St Stephen's Cathedral
The baroque St Stephen's Cathedral is Passau's landmark and houses the largest cathedral organ in the world, with over 17,000 pipes. The interior overwhelms with stucco, frescoes and gold by the Italian baroque masters. If you can, plan around the daily midday concert.
Tip: The great organ concert takes place on weekdays at noon — come early, the seats fill up fast.
- 11:00 - 12:30
Residenzplatz and baroque lanes to the Old Town Hall
From the cathedral through the Residenzplatz with the New Residence and the narrow, Italian-feeling lanes of the old town. The goal is the Old Town Hall with its striking tower and magnificent assembly hall right on the Danube.
- 12:30 - 13:45
Lower Bavarian fare in the old town
Around the town hall square and in the lanes towards the Inn there are cosy taverns serving Bavarian cuisine — roast pork, dumplings and a freshly tapped beer in a baroque setting.
- 14:00 - 15:00
Three Rivers Corner
At the tip of the old town the three rivers meet: the green Danube, the blue-green alpine Inn and the dark, moorland Ilz. When the water levels are right, you can clearly see the three colours side by side — a unique natural spectacle.
- 15:15 - 17:30
Veste Oberhaus with panoramic views
High above the city sits the Veste Oberhaus, one of the largest surviving fortresses in Europe. From the Batterie Linde viewpoint you look over the old town peninsula and the confluence of the rivers. Inside, the Oberhaus Museum tells the story of Passau.
Tip: In summer the Veste shuttle bus runs up from the town hall square — saving you the steep climb.
- 19:00 - 21:30
Dinner on the Danube promenade
Back in the old town the day winds down by the Danube. Along the promenade and in the lanes there are restaurants with river views — from Bavarian to Mediterranean, fitting the city's Italian flair.
