Bavarian Forest Treetop Walk
The Treetop Walk near Neuschönau in the Bavarian Forest National Park is one of the region's most popular attractions and leads for around 1,300 metres on a gentle, near-barrier-free incline through the crowns of beeches, spruces and firs, in places more than 25 metres up. Walking the trail offers an entirely unfamiliar perspective on the forest — at eye level with the treetops, where birds, lichens and the play of light feel within reach.
Along the way, numerous learning and discovery stations, suspension bridges and small tests of courage invite visitors to grasp the forest ecosystem playfully — which makes the walk especially exciting for children and families. The route is designed so that it can be managed comfortably with prams and wheelchairs.
The highlight and far-visible landmark is the 44-metre observation tower in the form of a vast, egg-shaped timber lattice that protectively encloses three old, living trees. A spiral ramp leads comfortably to the top, from where a wide panorama opens over the endless wooded ridges of the Bavarian Forest — in clear weather the view reaches all the way to the main Alpine ridge in the south. A rewarding excursion from Passau that combines well with a visit to the national park's animal enclosures.
